These films will be very much films Using small parts of Austen's narration, he placed it in the hand of Anne. After much reading and research, Hawkins came to view the character of Anne Elliot as a view of Jane Austen herself.
This, coupled with Director Adrian Shergold having Anne occasionally break the Fourth wall lent a sense of intimacy between the audience and the lead character, and with Jane Austen.
Elliott revealed that he had deliberately shied away from ordering adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility to focus on Austen's lesser known works.
Karen Price from the Western Mail reported ITV had promised the "cream of British acting talent", while they were casting the three adaptations. I had been slightly dismissive, and the fact that I was dismissive is shameful to me now.
It's like being dismissive of Dickens or Beckett. Her work had never really come into my world before and I'm so glad it has. She was only in her early forties when she died.
I became convinced that Persuasion was about her own love life; Anne Elliot took the wrong advice and left the man who turned out to be the love of her life.
She is the type of woman you'd like to be: reserved, refined, funny. I totally fell in love with her. He remarked, "In modern drama everything is so overt.
In period drama it's all held in. You have to find ways to show the feelings straining beneath the surface. The costume designer for Persuasion was Andrea Galer.
Galer made Anne's outfits simple and basic because she does not join in Bath society. Because we were shooting in winter, I could go for faded autumnal colours for her.
She gets Wentworth back just by her stillness and I wanted to reflect that in her wardrobe. The exhibition included creations worn by Anne, Lady Russell and the Musgrove sisters.
I suppose the one outfit that did sell that I would've been happy if it hadn't was the Harris tweed jacket and dress worn by Sally Hawkins when she played Anne Elliot in Persuasion.
Persuasion was the first of the three adaptations to begin development. Producer David Snodin explained, "Bringing Adrian on board is a statement in itself because he is not known for doing conventional versions of the classics.
It is a lot to do with the way he likes the camera to move — it's right in on people's faces — and he is creating something much more contemporary than you'd expect.
He said, "She inhabits every inch of the characters she plays. Persuasion was the third of the Austen adaptations to be shown in the UK.
Persuasion was well received by audiences, attracting 6. Critics compared the production with previous renditions of Persuasion and with other productions of well known Austen works.
The Daily Post chose Persuasion as "the best of the three offerings in this series. The performance by Hawkins was well received by most. Variety noted Persuasion "offers an appealing heroine, with Hawkins proving especially vulnerable as the passive Anne, who again risks letting a lifetime of happiness slip away from her.
Boland continued, "She looked suitably guarded and gauche at the outset but then chose, and was allowed, to become increasingly gormless, so that long before the end you were left wondering what on earth Captain Wentworth had ever seen in this open-mouthed, inarticulate eejit.
It was the worst piece of miscasting since Tom Cruise was asked to impersonate an icy hit-man in Collateral.
The Independent reported that Janeites were "horrified by the inappropriate kissing" in the adaptation. Persuasion garnered a nomination for Best Drama at the Prix Italia.

For example, the scene in the Bath concert hall when Anne Elliott is in deep conversation with her cousin William Elliott, which leads to Captain Wentworth's departure, is missing.
Also missing is the scene in the Elliot's Bath drawing room when Anne Elliott turns down the proposal of William Elliott.
The dialogue in this scene is terrific, and sorely missed in this version. Whatever its flaws, especially the last 10 minutes when Anne Elliott runs all over Bath looking for Captain Wentworth - what Austen heroine would do that - I still like this version.
I both love and hate this adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion. First what I hate about it: I also have the old, I think adaptation, with Ann Firbank and Bryan Marshall, and even though I didn't like it that much as far as casting and costumes, and some other elements, it at least told the whole story.
It was incredibly faithful to the novel. Possibly the biggest problem with this adaptation is that it is far too short.
Austen's stories are concise as well as long. They are complex tales that require some time and attention to detail to present properly.
This movie didn't go nearly far enough to do that. If I weren't already extremely familiar with the story, I would likely not have understood it at all.
There was so much left out, so much under-emphasized, and so much left unsaid. Even the characterization of the two lead characters was weak.
I could list everything in great detail, but I'll just say that if you've only seen this movie adaptation and have never read the book, you have no idea what you're missing.
What I loved about it: For someone already well familiar with the story, this movie presents almost a dream about it.
It has that quality, of a dream, and it's beautifully done. That's exactly how it felt to me, as if I read the novel, feel asleep, and had a beautiful, vague, foggy dream about the story.
To me that felt wonderful, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it on my next viewing, because I won't be so shocked at how much is missing.
So, thanks for the lovely dream, but to anyone who hasn't read it, please do yourself a favor and also read the book.
This is by far the superior version of Persuasion, with the unforgettable Sally Hawkins as Anne Elliot. Her performance will take your breath away.
This is the BBC version, and has much more heart and depth. I can not say enough about Hawkins' portrayal of the plain, timid, regretful Anne.
She was born to play this part. Most remarkably, the director has her "breaking the fourth wall" by looking directly at YOU, the viewer, at the most pivotal moments.
Her expression says everything, and pierces your heart. This film adaption of a Jane Austen novel is right up there with the two or three finest ever made, capturing the true feelings of the original book.
Difficult not to compare the various adaptations of "Persuasion", though; they all have their memorable moments. For me, Rupert Penry-Jones portrayed, to perfection, Cpt.
Sally Hawkins was a sweet and gentle Anne. The closing scene, with Cpt. Wentworth in front of the house, redeems the last 10 minutes of the movie.
It was a beatifully done adaptation, even though it took liberties with the book. I fast forward over the last few minutes Why no shot of the Captain looking lovingIy at Anne?
But neither did justice for what should and could have been a beautiful closing scene with 2 of Austen's most memorable characters..
Even though it was a 27 year old Anne that ran through the streets, maybe in her heart, she was that 18 year old girl who had said "no" 9 years earlier and she was not going to lose a second chance at love with her Captain.
So, she ran. And I wonder Any scenes with Cpt. Wentworth were my favorite because he brought his character, off the pages of the book, to life.
This is a very sweet, gentle story about one of the more timid of Jane Austen's heroines though few were overly brash.
Anne is a lovely character and this story is perhaps one of my favorites. Because the books were written for a very different time and are so long, it is difficult to condense the story into one 90 or minute movie - unless of course you are serializing it, then the BBC has some brilliant versions of Jane Austen's novels.
However, I enjoy different versions simply because each production generally emphasizes different parts of the story.
In this movie, all the characters are wonderful - although I thought the main roles were very well acted, the lesser roles not as much.
The acting is consistently superior and perhaps a more complete story although this version tells the story well.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English. In all the history of TV adaptations this must qualify for the worst dressed heroine, with the most unflattering hairstyle imaginable.
Anne Elliott is meant to be modest, not appallingly plain and poorly dressed. Sally Hawkins struggles with the problems of the hair and wardrobe departments well and manages to make the part feasible despite them.
They don't even once put the amazingly handsome Rupert Penry-Jones as Captain Wentworth in his Royal Naval uniform, which was meant to have the girls all swooning over him.
The houses which are used for the production are appropriate and beautiful but these are not essential, making the lead roles attractive is the priority.
Poor Sally Hawkins had her hair scraped back brutally with horribly waxed curls at the front and was wearing Granny's old curtains.
Other than this it was a reasonable production with one or two highlights like Anthony Head revelling marvellously in the character part of the vain father possibly even better than Corin Redgrave in the wonderful BBC production and the views of Bath and the Assembly Rooms.
I didn't think the photography or the direction were any good but the central roles were all very well played and well cast.
This is one of my favourite Jane Austen adaptations! I always feel the need to read the book at the end of the movie.
It's a modern interpretation of the main story and the theme of the book, which doesn't expect the viewer to know anything about the time period and social norms.
It's great for younger viewers or those just discovering Austen. The acting is fantastic, with so many great characters I wanted to know more about.
Anne and her father were my favourites. Yes, the ending is different from the book, and the running is a bit silly, but no more so than Mr Darcy going for a swim.
Sally Hawkins finde ich einfach fabelhaft in ihrer Rolle! Translate review to English.

Title: Persuasion TV Movie Royal Navy captain Wentworth was haughtily turned down eight years ago as suitor of pompous baronet Sir Walter Elliot's daughter Anne, despite true love.
Now he visits their former seaside country estate, rented by his brother-in-law, admiral Croft, so the financially stressed baronet can afford a fashionable, cheaper residence in trendy Bath.
First the former lovers meet again on the estate, where they feel vibes again, but neither dares admit them until it seems too late.
Yet the truth becomes clear, both have moved, but meet again in Bath. Written by KGF Vissers. Very different style from the previous two, and is rather sombre in tone, as befits the story and characters in the novel.
There is a voice over so as to enable the audience to get closer to the character of Anne Elliot played very well by Sally Hawkins. Rupert Penry-Jones is very good as Captain Wentworth, whose interaction with Anne is concise and to the point.
They are not strangers, but they are estranged. Adrian Shergold employs a lot of hand held camera, and uses a lot of close ups in order for the audience to recognise the relationships between characters and their feelings.
Quite often Sally Hawkins looks at the camera, and I felt this worked very well. My only slight annoyance with this adaptation was the director's unwillingness to have two people who are talking in the shot at the same time.
Preferring to move from a close up of one to a close up of the other shot reverse shot as it were continuously. This works well occasionally, but when it is as often as it is in this adaption you become very aware of the camera and its movements, which detracts from the story and the conversation itself.
This is my only slight problem with this adaptation. The supporting cast was brilliant, with Amanda Hale brilliantly playing Anne moronic younger sister.
This is to mention only a few. However, with last weeks brilliant Northanger Abbey and this weeks Persuasion they have finished on a high.
Each had its own tone and style, and forgetting Mansfield Park, they worked rather well. I would recommend this film to both fans of the book and newcomers to Austen's work.
I have deliberately refrained from comparisons between this and the version, both are very good and this one has some very inventive camera work.
