Jun 21, This is some pretty classic 90s, I love Mark Dacascos, and if you think you can sort of visualise in your head what a s Mark Dacascos as an unwilling assassin with a mystic tattoo romancing a woman he was supposed to kill might look like, and go "Yeah that's what I like in a movie" then, well it is that, so sure, give it a try.
But if you go "I only like good stories told in a three-act structure with human characters" then maybe don't. Gimly M Super Reviewer.
Nov 14, Probably Mark Dacascos finest hour in this highly stylised adaptation of a classic manga character and graphic novel.
This is where I first saw and heard of Dacascos and I really dug the guys talents, he was lean, athletic and he could do both Karate and Kung Fu styles, its just a shame that since this excellent film he went very much down hill with low budget action films.
As for this adaptation its really very good considering its one of the first major comicbook films along side 'The Crow' which went for a serious adult approach just like the original source.
To clear things up this is not a balls out action fest with killing and guns galore, its quite a thought provoking slow building story which does have some fantastic sequences but its not chock full of blazin' violence.
There is some gun porn here of course alongside some samurai sword fighting, martial arts, neat explosions with a few stunts and the now over used slow motion death sequences but it all looks very lush and sharp.
Remember this was and the mid 90's was the era of John Woo and his slick slow motion tomfoolery, so you know what to expect visually.
I think everyone knows to expect changes from the original source material though, something we just gotta live with I'm afraid.
I myself had long forgotten about this film and I'm glad I checked it out again as its well worth your time if you enjoy martial arts of course.
These days it will seem totally cliched and completely old hat but lets not forget it was one of the first serious comicbook adaptations.
The film was never released in the US at first, unsure if its available now, so maybe many have missed this cracking assassin flick?

Mai in die deutschen Reppa.De im englischen Originalton mit deutschen Untertiteln, wo er allerdings wenig Beachtung fand. Ihr gelingt es erfolgreich, der Bewachung durch die Polizei zu entgehen und so flüchtet sie nach Japan, wo sie sich mit Yo treffen will. Oct 14, I remember being quite dissapointed with this one, both as a fan of the manga and as a fan of action cinema.
Gans clearly knows his hong kong cinema, but he's no Woo, To, Lam or Hark. Needs a rewatch for sure. Tsubaki S Super Reviewer.

Emu Hino, a lonely and beautiful Japanese artist witnesses a Chinese man killing three men, then sees his eyes well up with tears. During the night, yakuza led by Ryuji "The Blade" Hanada, enters Emu's home to force her to disclose the name of the killer, critically injuring her.
Freeman and Koh kill the yakuza and shoot Kimie Hanada, then take Emu to the hospital, telling her to meet him later at his family's Hinomura Pottery.
There he tells her the story of how the Dragons turned him into the assassin, Crying Freeman. He takes revenge on the yakuza and then is severely punished by the Dragons for refusing to kill Emu.
He implements an elaborate plan for them to appear to be killed in the destruction of the Hinomura Pottery. When they are nominated as the organization's successors, Freeman is attacked by an disguised assassin indicating a traitor within their ranks.
They travel to Macau in search of evidence and track down Chen, a mask-maker, but Chen is killed before they can trace his employers. Later, in the rice fields, granddaughter Bai Ya Shan arrives, demanding leadership of the Dragons.
She kidnaps her grandparents and takes them to Wolon Island, daring Freeman to rescue them. Freeman lets himself be captured and beaten, and finds that Dragons elder member Planet Mercury is behind Bai Ya Shan, and is supported by Camorra's Organization.
After they reveal themselves, Freeman attacks and kills them all. He then defeats Bai Ya Shan and establishes his control over the organization.
