Only a few guessed the truth — that Vader was the reborn Jedi Anakin Skywalker. Vader sent agents such as the Inquisitor to find not just escaped Jedi but also new Force-sensitive beings that might pose a threat to the Empire.
After the Grand Inquisitor 's death, Vader became a more active participant in the hunt for the Lothal rebels and their Jedi. He set a trap for the freedom fighters and easily bested Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger in lightsaber combat, though the Jedi survived the encounter.
Vader also single-handedly wiped out most of Phoenix Squadron , but it was during this battle that he made a startling discovery: Ahsoka Tano lived.
Vader later tracked Tano and the rebels to the Sith Temple on Malachor , and found Bridger there, alone.
He quickly defeated the young Padawan, destroying his lightsaber and ready to deliver a killing blow. But he was interrupted by the former pupil of Anakin Skywalker , Ahsoka Tano.
Vader offered mercy if she would lead him to any survivng Jedi, but Tano refused; in return, the Sith Lord threatened to torture Bridger for the information.
Tano now saw that her Master was truly dead, and the two dueled. She held her own and struck Vader in the mask, severing the face plate. Upon seeing her former Master, Ahsoka called him "Anakin," saying she would not leave him.
Tano Force pushed her Jedi friends clear of the Temple, and clashed with Vader once more as the ancient building collapsed around them. Following the duel, Vader limped back to his ship.
Surprisingly, Darth Vader constructed his own castle, a testament to his might, at the site of his greatest defeat: the fiery lava-world, Mustafar.
The location and design of the castle came as much from the dark side as it did from Vader's personal history, however; the complex sits atop an ancient Sith cave, and the tuning towers serve as a conduit for the dark side of the Force.
Vader would rest in his castle, often in solitary meditation or alone in a bacta tank , awaiting orders from his Master.
Once the Death Star was complete and tested on Jedha , he summoned Director Orson Krennic , instructing the Imperial that the superweapon was to remain a covert tool of destruction.
Only when the time was right would its existence be revealed to the galaxy. When the plans for the Death Star were stolen, Vader would take action to clean up Krennic's mess, personally slaughtering a squad of rebel soldiers and leading the hunt for the data tapes.
Vader and his stormtroopers killed all aboard with the exception of the Princess, opting to take her to the Death Star for interrogation. Streaming through the Death Star trench and about to finish off the last of the Rebels -- Luke Skywalker in his X-wing -- Vader and his wingmen were attacked from behind by the Millennium Falcon.
Ricocheted away from the Death Star and spun out of control, Vader was unable to stop Luke. The space station was destroyed, but Vader survived, and he flew into the far reaches of space.
He had dispatched probe droids across the galaxy, finally locating the Rebel base on the remote ice planet Hoth.
With the Empire unable to secure the Millennium Falcon , Vader hired bounty hunters to track down the starship, and the deadly Boba Fett eventually set a trap for the heroes on Cloud City.
Believing they had found sanctuary, Han, Leia, and company actually found Vader and the Empire waiting. Vader tortured Han in an effort to lure Luke to Bespin , and later had Solo frozen in carbonite.
Finally, Luke, who had cut his Jedi training short to save his friends, arrived and dueled with Vader. The Sith Lord proved too powerful; he brutalized Luke with flying debris, and eventually severed his right hand with his lightsaber.
Rather than join Vader, Luke chose to fall into a deep abyss, and survived. During production of Return of the Jedi , the casting crew sought an experienced actor for the role of Anakin Skywalker since his death was unquestionably the emotional climax of the film, and Sebastian Shaw was selected for the role.
When McDiarmid asked him what he was doing there, Shaw responded, "I don't know, dear boy, I think it's something to do with science-fiction.
The unmasking scene, directed by Richard Marquand , was filmed in one day and required only a few takes, with no alteration from the original dialogue.
Shaw's image in this scene was replaced with that of Christensen in the DVD release. This last attempt to tie the prequel and original trilogies together proved to be possibly the most controversial change in the Star Wars re-releases.

Vader tells Luke that he is his father, and tries to persuade him to join the dark side and help him overthrow the Emperor. Horrified, Luke escapes through an air shaft.
Vader telepathically tells Luke that it is his destiny to join the dark side. Vader takes Luke to the Death Star to meet the Emperor. While there, Palpatine tempts Luke to give in to his anger, which leads to Vader dueling with Luke once again.
Furious, Luke overpowers Vader and severs his father's robotic hand. The Emperor entreats Luke to kill Vader and take his place.
Luke refuses and the Emperor tortures him with Force lightning. Unwilling to let his son die, Vader throws the Emperor down a reactor chute to his death, but is mortally wounded by his former master's lightning in the process.
In addition to being a gifted pilot and mechanic, Anakin has built his own protocol droid, C-3PO. Qui-Gon learns from Shmi that Anakin was conceived without a father and can foresee the future.
Qui-Gon senses Anakin's strong connection to the Force and becomes convinced that he is the "Chosen One" of Jedi prophecy who will bring balance to the Force.
After winning his freedom in a podrace wager, Anakin leaves with Qui-Gon to be trained as a Jedi on Coruscant , but is forced to leave his mother behind.
Qui-Gon asks the Jedi Council for permission to train Anakin, but they sense fear in the boy and refuse. Eventually, Anakin helps end the Trade Federation 's invasion of Naboo by destroying their control ship.
Over the years, he has grown powerful but arrogant, and believes that Obi-Wan is holding him back. While there, Anakin learns that Shmi had been freed by and married farmer Cliegg Lars Jack Thompson a few years after he left.
He then visits Cliegg and learns from him that she was kidnapped by Tusken Raiders. Anakin locates Shmi at a Tusken campsite, where she dies in his arms.
Anakin, enraged, massacres the Tusken tribe and returns to the Lars homestead to bury Shmi. Dooku captures the trio and sentences them to death.
However, a battalion of Jedi arrives with an army of clone troopers to halt the executions. They rescue Palpatine and return to Coruscant.
Suspicious of Palpatine, the Council allows Anakin as a member, but declines to grant him the rank of Jedi Master and instead instructs him to spy on Palpatine, diminishing Anakin's trust in the Jedi.
Jackson , who confronts and subdues Palpatine. Anakin then pledges himself to the Sith, and Palpatine dubs him Darth Vader.
On Palpatine's orders, Vader leads the st Legion to kill everyone in the Jedi Temple, including the children, and then goes to the volcanic planet Mustafar to assassinate the Separatist Council.
Obi-Wan engages Vader in a lightsaber duel that ends with Obi-Wan severing Vader's limbs and leaving him for dead on the banks of a lava flow, severely burned.
Palpatine finds a barely alive Vader and takes him to Coruscant, where his mutilated body is treated and covered in the black suit first depicted in the original trilogy.
Vader's melted helmet appears in The Force Awakens , in which Vader's grandson Kylo Ren Adam Driver is seen addressing him, though Vader does not appear in the film.
At one point, his helmet was considered as the film's MacGuffin. The film also reveals that the voice which Ren perceived coming from Vader's helmet in The Force Awakens was generated by Palpatine.

In the first anthology film Rogue One , Vader makes a cameo appearance in which he meets with Imperial weapons engineer Orson Krennic Ben Mendelsohn , who asks him for an audience with the Emperor regarding the Death Star, which Krennic lost command of to Tarkin.
Vader refuses, however, using the Force to choke him, and ordering him to ensure that the Death Star project has not been compromised.
At the end of the film, Vader boards the disabled Rebel flagship Profundity with a cadre of st Legion troopers and kills several Rebel soldiers as he attempts to recover the plans.

Vader later tracked Tano and the rebels to the Sith Temple on Malachor , and found Bridger there, alone. He quickly defeated the young Padawan, destroying his lightsaber and ready to deliver a killing blow.
But he was interrupted by the former pupil of Anakin Skywalker , Ahsoka Tano. Vader offered mercy if she would lead him to any survivng Jedi, but Tano refused; in return, the Sith Lord threatened to torture Bridger for the information.
Tano now saw that her Master was truly dead, and the two dueled. She held her own and struck Vader in the mask, severing the face plate.
Upon seeing her former Master, Ahsoka called him "Anakin," saying she would not leave him. Tano Force pushed her Jedi friends clear of the Temple, and clashed with Vader once more as the ancient building collapsed around them.
Following the duel, Vader limped back to his ship. Surprisingly, Darth Vader constructed his own castle, a testament to his might, at the site of his greatest defeat: the fiery lava-world, Mustafar.
The location and design of the castle came as much from the dark side as it did from Vader's personal history, however; the complex sits atop an ancient Sith cave, and the tuning towers serve as a conduit for the dark side of the Force.
Vader would rest in his castle, often in solitary meditation or alone in a bacta tank , awaiting orders from his Master.
Once the Death Star was complete and tested on Jedha , he summoned Director Orson Krennic , instructing the Imperial that the superweapon was to remain a covert tool of destruction.
Only when the time was right would its existence be revealed to the galaxy. When the plans for the Death Star were stolen, Vader would take action to clean up Krennic's mess, personally slaughtering a squad of rebel soldiers and leading the hunt for the data tapes.
Vader and his stormtroopers killed all aboard with the exception of the Princess, opting to take her to the Death Star for interrogation.
Streaming through the Death Star trench and about to finish off the last of the Rebels -- Luke Skywalker in his X-wing -- Vader and his wingmen were attacked from behind by the Millennium Falcon.
Ricocheted away from the Death Star and spun out of control, Vader was unable to stop Luke. The space station was destroyed, but Vader survived, and he flew into the far reaches of space.
He had dispatched probe droids across the galaxy, finally locating the Rebel base on the remote ice planet Hoth. With the Empire unable to secure the Millennium Falcon , Vader hired bounty hunters to track down the starship, and the deadly Boba Fett eventually set a trap for the heroes on Cloud City.
