Florence Pugh gives a particularly devastating performance requiring subtlety, vulnerability and then brashness and crushing depravity.
The script is very slender - there are few, if any, disposable scenes. The direction follows suit, adding an air of claustrophobia - first, that which Pugh's character feels and then the power and brutality which fall on the others.
In the end, I found myself wondering how I could even root for such a person. I suspect that's what makes this film so fascinating. Incredible acting, intense drama and suspense, wonderfully written and directed.
If you're looking for something gripping that will make you dissolve into the story, waiting to find out how it will all end, then this is the movie for you.
The writer took a common theme - a nineteenth century forced marriage to a cold, cruel man - and turned it into something fresh and unexpected.
I want to watch it again - highly recommended! And I must say that I did really enjoy most of this movie, up until the last act. I can understand most of the motivation in this movie, but there is just a little something missing when the main character murders the last victim and it simply ruins it for me.
I just don't believe she would do that, killing the men who sought to control her is understandable, the last part is not. The movie then becomes more about her basic lust, than actual love and liberation.
A more creative solution, like she already demonstrated she is capable of, would've been so much better.
My version isn't a depressing tragedy though. I thought the acting was great, but I would not watch it again. I felt depressed when it was over.
