This gem, made in Czechoslovakia, was played in late 70s, 80s and 90s, mostly in communist and ex-communist countries. The cartoons were so good, that new series were made until recently and are still played on local TVs.
The premise is simple. Two friends with tendency to corrupt working devices and accidentally damage their fine built living habitat, use their creative thinking and lots of improvisation to repair the damage or regain functionality of broken objects.
The series usually ends while testing their new achievement and making the distinctive handshake. Let me just introduce one part I find particularly funny: while repairing the parquet floor, the two characters find the self propelling polishing machine fun to ride on, and each using their own, start chasing each other.
After they find that using usual electrical socket makes them entangled in cables, they simply remove the light in the room and use its wiring to power the polish-machines : After they get enough of chasing, the parquet-floor is unfortunately already used all the way down to concrete.
The show doesn't contain talking and the plots are simple enough for even the smallest kids to understand. Next to that, the plots something I dub "bringing up the technical spirit" : But what really stands out is the ingenuity behind the plots that usually makes the viewer almost fall out of chair.
A feature that also needs to be noted is harmonica-played soundtrack that is know pretty much all over eastern Europe. The series are known and viewed by young and old.

The characters were voiced by Czech actor David Nykl , [8] who wrote the dialogues himself. The episode was dubbed in English for an anticipated breakthrough of the series on the English market.
The studio's original plan was to make further episodes of the new series, and possibly also half-hour episodes and a feature film. Eventually, the Zürich management member terminated all contacts to his former colleagues in Prague.
Due to these circumstances, Karty has never been released or distributed in Czechia and most of the world, while aiF declared bankruptcy in and was finally liquidated in Although the episode was pulled from distribution, a screenshot from it was posted on aiF Studio's website.
The former Prague management later set up a new studio, animation people , and posted more screenshots on their website, which were eventually replaced with a short, silent clip of the episode.
With aiF's liquidation in , the episode was transferred to the Czech Film Archive. The short was also screened abroad, where someone objected that the colours of the shirts, red and yellow, were chosen to make fun of the tense Soviet-Chinese relations , with red representing the USSR and yellow China.
The authors were therefore forced to change Mat's shirt from red to a neutral grey until , when the Communist regime collapsed and it was safe to make Mat's shirt red again.
However, as the Slovak Television in Bratislava showed interest in further episodes, twenty-eight episodes were produced for them instead, with great success.
In Switzerland, the children's television programmers of the German-language station Schweizer Fernsehen banned some of the episodes because they contained high amounts of slapstick violence , which they deemed "too dangerous".
The French - and Italian - language channels broadcast the offending episodes as normal. The show had its intro and outro changed and almost all scenes in which the characters use knives or which contain slapstick violence deemed too "intense" were cut.
In November , on IRIB TV2 , an accidental broadcast of an uncensored episode of the series that showed how to prepare alcohol from grapes led to the dismissal of three employees of Iranian television.
