Apart from that Djam beautifully captures rebellion, companionship and grief depicted through a Greek girl's journey to Istanbul and back.

What I liked most about this film is its authenticity. While the adventures and the encounters might seem far-fetched or hardly believable, I don't think realism was the goal here, and therefore the odd episodes work perfectly in the context.

They serve the purpose of showing us, in general, a sadness, a grieving, a struggle that feel, as I said, authentic.

Nothing is fancy: the back roads, the roofs of Istanbul, the rundown buildings, the wonderful yet desolate look of the sunburnt Mediterranean countryside, the dire situation of Lesbos and the whole of Greece.

And that's exactly because all these things look like something we can see everyday with our very eyes that we can relate so much. Musicals are my favourite film genre.

When the Greeks and the Turks separated, quite traumatically years ago the "solution" was hard boundaries, both physical and cultural, where these people with so much in common had to define themselves by emphasizing their differences, --and looking askance at, or down on, their commonalities.

It is pleasant to see a film, whatever its minor flaws, touch on the commonalities. And a lost world of so much in common that for future generations might be regained.

As our world, especially Europe, experiences a steady influx of immigrants, new cultures and lifestyles, influencing our ways of life.

The story of rebetiko, or rembetiko, is one which can be seen as a parable on this phenomenon, especially the potential it has to offer. Regarding its history, rebetiko can be traced back to the 19th century.

As fervent and free-spirited as the folksy tunes of Rebetiko, the soul of which this film embodies through its protagonist.

It is essentially a road-movie, deliberately loosely structured, and like most of its ilk it also doubles as a search for identity through the rediscovery of one's roots.

Gatlif intersperses his fun-loving laidback narrative with moments of stillness and reflection, when he gives us glimpses of the aftermath of the refugee crisis in Greece and Turkey, mostly content to just leave the issues at the doorstep without getting in too deeply.

Beautifully shot for the most part and stunningly enacted by Daphne Patakia with a firecracker-like performance.

As someone who was interested in Greek culture, I was impressed by the film. It was especially enjoyable to listen to Turkish-Greek songs.
